If you don’t know how to open your car’s hood there is no way that you can do even the simplest of jobs on your car such as check the oil, antifreeze, transmission fluid, refilling windshield wiper fluid or checking accessory belts. All of these things are things that you should be able to do on your own without having to depend on or pay someone else to do for you. The encouraging part of this is that opening your car’s hood is pretty straight forward, if you know how to do it. Now one thing to keep in mind is that the hood release may be different in different types of cars. Although the hood release is located in different places from one vehicle to the next, all hood releases work in basically the same manner.

-In newer vehicles the hood release is typically inside the passenger cabin right around the steering column or on the floor next to the driver’s seat. In typically has the word “Hood” printed on it or it is a picture of the car with its hood up. If you pull it and the trunk opens, you’ve pulled the wrong release. In some models the hood release latch is behind the grill or behind the bumper. Pull on it, where ever it may be.

-All vehicles have a safety hood release latch that catches the released hood from opening all of the way. Its real purpose is to stop the hood from popping all the way up while you are driving and blocking your view of the road. Normally you must move the latch sideways or pull and push it out of the way. Look in between the hood and the grill and move the latch handle.

-Once the hood is open, it usually will stay open on its own. However, there are some vehicles that have a prop rod or safety rod that you must extend and connect to the hood to keep it open.

If you are having trouble finding your hood latch release, consult your vehicle owner’s manual for its exact location. If you still can’t get your hood open, most dealerships will show you how for free as a service to you, its customer.
