Driving is something we all have to face when we are stepping out of childhood and into adulthood. We all are going to have to go through getting our learners permit and finally, our license. Whether we are scared, excited, or just unemotional about getting our privilege to learn to drive, there are a lot of pointers you could use to make your whole driving experience safer and more successful. You won’t be getting any awards for it just like you wouldn’t get any NKY plaques or Florence t-shirts, but you will get the satisfaction of being able to be independent from your parents finally. The following are some tips to be good at driving so you can cruise anywhere.

One of the first things you need to do while driving is always drive defensively. You must drive like you can’t trust the other drivers on the road. Assume that all of them might do anything wrong at any second. This way, you will be able to anticipate their wrong moves at any time. You would also never be caught off guard so there will be fewer accidents or even none. When you get to a green light in an intersection, a busy one at that, make sure that you always check to see if any one will come driving through and run the stop light. This often happens and is one of the leading causes of car accidents each year. So to stay away from this, you must set your defenses at all time and not let yourself get carried away with the new found freedom of driving.

Another thing that you need to be aware of while starting out on the road is distractions. You must be able to minimize distractions as much as possible. You can take your cell phone with you, but you should either keep it off or away from you. This is just in case you feel tempted to reach for it to answer a call or a text while driving. Any of these actions are extremely hazardous and could ultimately lead to a car accident and pain for you and possible others who could get involved. Now you wouldn’t want this to happen would you? I’m sure no one would wish this kind of pain and horror on anybody especially when the blame would be all on you for letting yourself get distracted in the car.

Another thing to do is to watch out for the small things. They all may seem a little bit unimportant, but believe the fact that they all add up to be very vital in your journey in driving. These little things include, your blinkers, your breaks and can even be as miniscule as your windshield wipers. Make sure your breaks work well and effectively so that you don’t run into any problems.

Helpful tips to remember when you first get out on the road. There are so many obstacles you will need to overcome, but there is hope of avoiding them and becoming the supreme driver. When you get out there, keep these pointers in mind and you are guaranteed to be a safe and skillful driver.

When you buy a car, you know you’re always going to have to fix it sooner or later. Well, instead of going to the store, and buying an automobile manual for your car, why not look for free alternatives? Since free is always better than buying something, let me give you a few tips on how you can find the best, and free auto repair manuals online.

A simple search engine search

We all love search engines and this is how many of us find what we are looking for. If you’re in need of a particular fix for your car, go straight to the search engine. For example, let’s say you own a 2005 Honda Civic, and something is wrong with the brakes. If you do a simple search for “2005 Honda Civic brake problems”, you’ll get thousands of results.

The great thing about search is that you’re able to narrow it down to your particular problem, rather than scour though hundreds of pages in a book. This will make it a lot easier for you, and cause a lot less stress for you.

Now, keep in mind that these websites, and videos aren’t always going to be the greatest, but it may give you a great idea on where to start. If you’re having problems finding what you’re looking for, you may want to just go out to the store, and get the manual yourself. You’ll find that these manuals today shouldn’t cost you more than $25 max.

If you own a car then you have probably already had some experience with car leaks, at least to some degree. Even new cars can develop leaks that are both annoying and frustrating. In the 1980s and 1990s engine leaks and other automotive leaking problems were the cause of a large majority of auto service appointments.

Now there are better engineering designs and materials used in the automotive manufacturing process. This has resulted in a decrease in customer complaints because new car parts have been noted to have substantially less problems with leak malfunctions.

Keep Engine Leaks at Bay

For those of you that may be unfamiliar with the basics of engine seals here is a list of what a car engine needs in order to be leak-free.

1. Motor oil

2. Proper compression

3. Fitted gaskets

4. Intact seals

5. Engine coolant

6. Fuel

Understanding Engine Seals

Most of the seals that protect your car engine are designed with double lips so that the motor oil can not leak out. One of the seals is designed to contain the oil, and the other is meant to stop any debris from contaminating the oil system. Although these lipped seals do not move they still have a big job to do because the car parts that they are surrounding are in motion. This is why many automotive techs refer to these car accessories as dynamic engine seals.

You will find dynamic seals used on car parts that are either rotating or belt driven. Two examples of these are crankshafts and camshafts. These are crucial elements for your car engine and it only takes a small leak to create a great deal of damage. An oil leak from a camshaft seal can result in ruined valves and timing belts which are both costly repairs.

How Leaks Begin

Small bits of grit, dust and road dirt are always flying about the exterior of auto engines. If there is a small opening in any seal it can allow some of these contaminants to adhere to the inner surface. Then as the shafts are moving they are being abraded by these particles’ sharp edges.

The constant motion of these rotating and belt driven car parts will soon cause small grooves to form along the sides of the shafts. Now the integrity of the seals and shafts are both compromised. Once these irregular grooves have formed on the metal surfaces, leaking will soon follow.

Fixes for Seals

There are times when worn metal surfaces can be repaired instead of being replaced. Some mechanics are able to grind and weld the shafts until the surface area meats the necessary specifications. There is also a slip-sleeve that is available for some front crankshafts. This product is a fine metal covering that can be applied to the damaged area and will then cover the grooves. These are both elaborate and high priced technical projects that are only suggested for ultra expensive vehicles. Car parts such as engine seals and shafts can be replaced at a more affordable cost.

Gaskets and Engine Leaks

In the past a lot of car accessories and engine parts used gaskets that contained cork. The cork would work for a while but it deteriorated at a relatively quick pace. This material would stop a leak by swelling up and forming a tighter seal, but only after a small amount of oil had leached into the gasket.

Another type of engine gasket was made from RTV silicone and this could create a secure seal but only under special conditions. The silicone base meant that it had to be applied to an engine surface that was absolutely clean and free of any oily residue. Many mechanics had trouble getting the metal surface prepped to these exacting specifications.

Most of today’s new gaskets are made form synthetic rubber compounds. These engine gaskets are reliable and are much less likely to form a leak. This is the type of gasket that is preferred by knowledgeable mechanics and auto enthusiasts.

Gasket Seal Problems

When placing gaskets onto surfaces it seems that many auto techs and mechanics tend to tighten them too much. In order to address this problem there are some newer designs that use metal spacers. These spacers are actually in the gaskets which helps prevent the over tightening seen in the past. Newer car parts such as the cast aluminum engine covers and those made from plastics have also been responsible for protecting gaskets from this common problem.

There are also some gaskets that are more likely to be the source of engine leaks even if they have been properly installed. A car’s head gaskets and those used on the intake manifold are the ones that should be checked first if an engine leak is noted.

Internal Manifold and Head Gaskets

Engine compression, coolants and oil all depend on an intact head gasket seal. The intake manifold gaskets that are on cars are responsible for insuring the integrity of coolants, gas and diesel fumes and air. If these seals are damaged, or compromised you are assured of having leaks from your car that are going to be noticeable.

Engines and Aluminum Car Parts

The fact that so many engine car parts are now made from aluminum is an additional problem. Because of this metal’s expansion and contraction the gaskets must be allowed some movement allowance. This means that a mechanic needs to make sure that when the repairs are done the gaskets are capable of allowing for the movement of internal car parts as the temperature and weather changes.

Torque to Yield Bolts

Gaskets are internal car parts and they are placed in areas where bolts are going to be required. A mechanic can use incorrect bolts or too much torque and this will result in gasket failure. In this type of situation there could be a compression leak or coolant leak from head gaskets as well as warping of the heads. To prevent this from occurring most auto shops are now using the type of car engine bolts that are known as “torque to yield”.

Check and Repair Engine Leaks

No matter how old, or new, your car is you will need to check on any type of coolant engine leak. Just 2-3 tablespoons of an antifreeze liquid seeping into the oil compartment could ruin some vital car parts. Antifreeze and oil is a mix that can ruin the bearings in any car engine.

If you do not want to take your car to a garage you can handle the situation yourself. Certainly there are many different products that you can use to repair gaskets and seals. Your mechanic or auto supply store can help you find the right one for your vehicle. Just remember if you are doing the repairs yourself you need to make sure that you are using a quality product and applying it correctly. Follow the specifications and make sure to clean the surfaces properly and have exact alignment before making the repairs.

You don’t have to be a horrible driver to get into an accident. In the state of North Carolina, where I have lived for the past few years now, I have never seen more people get into accidents than when the weather is poor. For instance, any time it starts to rain, you can be sure to hear something on the news about people getting into a motor vehicle accident. It’s almost as if the meteorologists have a magic wand that they wave prior to announcing the weather that causes people to just start getting into accidents. When I worked as a police officer, I would sometimes dread going to work on days when the skies looked ominous because ominous skies meant that there was a good chance we were going to get some sort of precipitation. As soon as the weather people came on and announced that it would rain later, I would hear the radio in my patrol car start buzzing with dispatches to various locations where people had just gotten into an accident. It was magical, I swear.

Nine times out of ten, accidents are preventable. That’s the definition of an accident if you think about it: “I didn’t mean to do it, but it happened.” I would get to the scene of the accident, and the case was always the same: Person ‘A’ ran into Person ‘B’ with their vehicle, rear ending them because Person ‘A’ wasn’t paying attention. A lot of the time, we would get people who played dumb or who apparently didn’t pay attention during driver’s education when the “2 second rule” was being discussed. What do I mean? The two-second rule is a rule used in driver’s education to educate up and coming drivers about the importance of keeping a safe distance between their vehicle and the vehicle in front of them. One way of doing this is by counting to the number to using some stationary object on the side of the road to gauge your distance. For example, let’s say there is a person driving in front of you. You would glance out the window at a fire hydrant on the side of the road. When the person in front of you passed the fire hydrant, you would begin to count “One Mississippi….” until you reached the number two. If you passed the same fire hydrant less than two seconds after the person in front of you, then you are following them too closely.

Another way to interpret the “two-second rule” is by car length. Ideally, you should be leave approximately one and a half to two car lengths between you and the person in front of you. If you live somewhere like New York City of Washington D.C. where the traffic is heavier, you should always make sure that you leave at least enough room that you can see the person’s rear bumper in its entirety. There are plenty of reasons for not tailgating other people. For one, when the weather is bad, not leaving enough room increases the likelihood that if that person in front of you reacts suddenly, you won’t have enough time to react. Additionally, if you are stopped and are right on top of another person, it doesn’t leave you enough room with an optional way out in case the person behind you doesn’t stop or in case the person in front of you breaks down, etc.

Has your car been giving you trouble? Costly repairs can be avoided by buying a used-car extended warranty. You may have not thought about this and may only think that you can buy an extended warranty and a car dealership, however that is far from the truth.

Regardless of how many miles are on your car, you can save a lot of money on repairs by buying an extended service contract for your car and by buying it direct you can save hundreds if not thousands of dollars versus buying it through a car dealership.

Most people only even think about extended warranties for a car when they are sitting in a dealership finance office and it is being offered to them. The fact is that 90% of people could avoid hundreds and thousands of dollars in both the cost of an extended warranty as well as an unneeded repair bills if they simply knew where to go and what to do. There are companies that can offer you an extended warranty for a new or used vehicle regardless of when you bought it or you bought it from.

Unlike health insurance and life insurance, there is no background check on your car. If you’ve had transmission problems or other costly repair bills and your vehicle is now in good working condition, you can inexpensively buy an extended warranty that will cover the cost of small and major repairs. It’s not expensive and can be the best hundred bucks you’ve ever spent.

There are legitimate companies that can offer you a real value in a solid contract that will pay 100% of major repair bills with no deductible. The same used car warranty that you would pay $1000 for a car dealership can be purchased for a small fraction of that amount if you purchase it directly. It’s a great way to save money and to be protected from outrageous repair bills.

When you are looking at used-car extended warranty quote comparisons from multiple companies using an online comparison website, you should look to compare not only the price of each warranty is offered based on the year, make and model of your vehicle, but you should also look at a couple other things.

You should always read the fine print in any service contract offer as there are many stipulations and things that can be deceiving.

You should also consider what level of coverage that each company is offering. This is were it can get confusing for some people. Some contracts will offer bumper-to-bumper coverage that cover everything that a new car warranty covers, there are some companies that offer an intermediate level of coverage that covers major repairs with the addition of smaller items, while others only cover the basic powertrain.

Do you have that huge piece of junk in your garage? Do you crib every time you see that old unused car occupying your precious garage space? Do not despair for we shall give you valuable information which will help you to solve your crisis. You can easily get rid of it by donating your car. Naturally, it will save a lot of space in your house and make it look better. However, if you are thinking that the benefits of car donation end here, you are wrong. Remember there are plenty of other advantages which are associated with car donation.

When you donate a car, you free yourself from the hassles associated with the useless car. You no longer have any liabilities to the car; you don’t have to maintain it any more. In short, the donation will help you to relax.

Car donation can save you a lot of money as well. Often we overlook the fact that selling is an expensive means to get rid of certain things. But, when you are selling an old car, you might have to put advertisements in the newspapers and other media and that can often work out to be an expensive option. Yet, this is the only effective means to get customers if you are not getting any. On the contrary, the donation of your car does not involve even the minimum expenditure.

However, there is another way through which the car donations enhance your financial health. Like any other donations, this type of donation is also completely tax deductible. So, you don’t have to pay any sales tax once you have donated the car. If you are donating it for charity, the amount is completely deductible from tax. In recent times, however, the modifications in the tax laws have brought some changes regarding the tax deduction. Still, the amount that you will save in tax is a considerable one for sure.

It has not been not long since Honda announced that production would cease on the Honda S2000. The news was declared in January after poor sales continued to get worse.

The main and most successful marketplace for the S2000 was in America where it enjoyed great success in the early years. It was originally launched in 1999 to celebrate Honda’s 50th anniversary. However, sales of the roadster began to dramatically fall in 2006 and the trend continued year on year.

Although poor sales justify the news from Honda, many believe that the S2000 is still one of the most entertaining and fun-to-drive roadsters around.

In particular the handing on the S2000 was often praised for being perfectly balanced. The little roadster almost gripped the road because of its fine balance. This little car was definitely designed to please the driver!
Honda are set to use the money saved from the S2000 to produce some more mainstream products. Rivals of the S2000 will be pleased production has ceased as the car was favored by many — so if you’re after a fun little roadster what do you go for now?

The Nissan 350z is an obvious choice. However, your wallet will hurt more every time you fill up the Nissan 350Z than the Honda because of its bigger tank — so you wont be saving money at the pumps. Taller drivers will also far prefer the extra head room in the Nissan 350Z compared to the Honda — which will make for a more comfortable ride.

Another down point on the Nissan is that it is massively more bulky than the S2000, which some people may dislike. Another contender is the slightly more pricey Porsche Boxster. The Boxster is a true sportscar with excellent horsepower. The Porsche certainly packs a punch and beats the Honda is this particular battle. On the down side, cars with more horsepower often qualify for higher insurance premiums.

Hondas are renowned for their reliability which is definitely a good thing to know if you’re looking for a used Honda S2000 as you can rest assured knowing that its likely to keep running for years to come.

So if like lots of motorists across the world, you’re disappointed that there wont be any new models being produced anymore you’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty of used Honda S2000s available in used car dealerships across the country.

In a world that has become increasingly concerned with conservation, my life has become saturated by indecision and doubt. I can’t even throw a Banana peel in the bin without my girlfriend shouting at me that I need to compost it / recycle it / staple it to the fridge. I fully appreciate that climate change is real and not just a phenomenon dreamed up to repress us, but it does seem to revolve around a system of guilt. If I don’t compost the aforementioned Banana peel then the rainforest will disappear. If I don’t put the recycling out then the Earth will turn into a flaming, gaseous molten rock. See what I mean? I’m wracked with guilt 24/7.

One of the main arguments the ‘Green Set’ have is with those of us who own and operate cars. Unless you drive an emission-free, electric, bubble car then there are going to be those who take it as an affront against them and point at you shouting “Planet Killer!” as you drive past. This isn’t ideal and if possible I would rather avoid it.

I have made a step toward reducing my emissions by buying a smaller car, which I happen to think is a very positive step in the right direction. The small hatchback market is awash with cars that have reduced emissions; saturated to the gills by cars with engines no bigger than those on a Singer Sewing Machine, but not all these are suitable.

I ended up buying a Honda Jazz from Bristol Honda as this seemed to be the perfect combination of a low emission car, that still commanded the kind of power that would get me from 0-60 within one Lunar Cycle. In fact it turns out that the Honda Jazz is a wonderful urban car; peppy in low revs, comfortable on the motorway and large enough to house my growing family. At this rate I will be hailed as an Eco-Warrior by the end of the year.

In all seriousness, the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy isn’t going to happen overnight, but if we all take baby steps toward it the process will happen a lot quicker and maybe my guilt complex will ease into a more manageable neurosis. My first step was by buying a Honda Jazz and reducing my carbon emissions.

Cash For Clunkers, otherwise known as CARS (Car Allowance Rebate System) is a Federally funded program paid for with American tax dollars even though the products of foreign manufacturers qualify for the rebates as well. It was designed for two purposes;

1) To stimulate the economy by reducing new car inventories and

2) To increase overall gas mileage figures by removing older, less efficient vehicles from service.

There are several things you should know before you decide that trading in a car possibly in need of some repairs and services is right for you.

1) To qualify for the program the vehicle being traded in cannot be more than 25 years old.

2) The maximum credit you can receive is $4,500 but it can be as low as $3,500. It depends on the difference between the gas mileage of the car you trade in and the new car you buy or lease. If the fuel economy of the new car is at least 4 but less than 10 mpg higher than the traded vehicle the credit will be $3,500. If it is more than a 10 mpg difference the credit will be $4,500. For SUVs, vans and pickups (category 1 vehicles) the fuel economy of the new vehicle must be at least 2 but less than 5 mpg higher than the trade in for a $3,500 credit and over 5 mpg higher for the $4,500 credit. For category 2 vehicles the fuel economy of the new vehicle must be at least 1 but less than 2 mpg higher than the trade in for a $3,500 credit and over 2 mpg higher for the $4,500 credit. Category 3 vehicles (known as work trucks; large pickups for example with a bed at least 72″ long) don’t have an mpg requirement. They only qualify for the $3,500 rebate and must have been manufactured no later than 2001 and no earlier than 25 years prior to the trade in date.

3) A new leased vehicle only qualifies if it is on at least a five year lease.

4)The program does not apply to new vehicles with an MSRP over $45,000.

5) The credit is all you will receive for your traded vehicle. Since it is being sold as scrap it will have no additional value. You may also have to pay a fee of up to $50 to have it crushed.

6) Although the rebate is not taxed federally, it may be taxed by individual states and localities.

7) The vehicle to be traded must have been registered to the current owner and must have had continuous insurance coverage for at least one year prior to the trade in date.
For a new car to qualify it must have a combined city/highway gas mileage of at least 22 miles per gallon. Category 1 trucks at least 18 mpg, category 2 trucks 15 mpg and category 3 the heaviest trucks, don’t have a mileage requirement although they can only be traded for another category 3 or a category 2 vehicle.

9) The vehicle to be traded in must have had a combined city/highway gas mileage of less than 18 mpg when it was new.

10) The vehicle to be traded must be drivable.

11) The program only applies to trade-ins towards new vehicles, not used ones.

Factors of which to be aware:

1) Many new car dealers would give up to $4,500 in trade-in money without the program just to move new cars. So the fact that this program exists doesn’t change anything much except that American tax dollars are once again being used to bail out the world.

2) Foreign manufacturers who are not in the same financial difficulties as the American car companies will reap a good portion of the benefits of the program while only a tiny percentage of American taxpayers will be able to avail themselves of it.

3) Even though dealers are supposed to give all additional rebates and discounts to consumers, that may or may not happen depending upon the individual dealer’s sales tactics so the buyer must beware.

4) It’s only another form of trade in money. If you buy a new vehicle you start the monthly payment cycle all over again for the next 4, 5, or 6 years.

5) Even if you can qualify for 0% financing (if your dealer has that program) that only takes care of the interest; you will still have a hefty monthly payment.

6) Registering a new vehicle will no doubt raise your insurance rates as well.

7) You might be paying out thousands of additional dollars to save only a couple of miles per gallon.
Even if your vehicle needs a major repair, like an engine or a transmission, the entire cost to fix it could be less than the down payment or the sales tax on a new vehicle. That would give you back full use of your vehicle without the monthly payments.

In tough economic times like these you may want to think long and hard before signing on to any long term commitment. We know how quickly the employment situation can change. Keeping what you have and investing a few bucks in it might be the most prudent way to go.
