One of the saddest trends in our culture has been the increasing level of selfishness. We now seem unsympathetic to the poor, believing them to be scroungers who decide not to work to support themselves and their families. Even though this means poverty, we stereotype them as preferring to live on state benefits and handouts. Although there will undoubtedly be some people who game the system, it’s incredible a Christian nation like ours should turn on the poor. Why would the ordinary person refuse work when it’s offered? Why would anyone chose to live in rundown tenements if a living wage could pay for something better? The practical reality is that people find themselves in a poverty trap.

They are an army of people competing for the few jobs that mostly don’t pay a living wage. When it comes to insurance, we find the levels of uninsured drivers creeping up to 20% in many states. As a result, this forces the law-abiding drivers to pay more. If you have collision cover and an uninsured driver crashes into you, it’s unlikely this driver has the cash to pay your medical expenses and for the repair of your vehicle. Even though the accident is not your fault, your own premium rate is likely to rise. Indeed, everyone’s rate will rise to fill in the gap with if at-fault drivers are not paying for a mandatory liability policy. Premium rates only fall when the number of people buying insurance rise significantly. For vehicle insurance, this means actively enforcing the mandatory rule for liability cover.

If all the one-in-five uninsured drivers paid their way, everyone would pay less. But we now run into a problem. Nationally, the rate of unemployment still shows more than 9% of the adult population without work. In fact, this figure is a joke. In many states, the real rates of people without work can be more than 20% with the young and old particularly badly hit. If people are not working or only earn a few dollars a month, they cannot afford the current premium rates. You can’t get blood out of a stone. That’s what makes the proposed law in Nevada so interesting. Kelvin Atkinson has been promoting a bill to provide a low-cost program for drivers earning less than $20,000 per year. It’s estimated such a law would save local drivers more than $180 on current premiums. Suddenly the Republicans are saying the poor should take a bus or ride bicycles, and leave the car at home. They also point to California where a similar program is already in effect and less than 50,000 uninsured drivers signed up.

The argument seems to be you should not even make the offer to help the poor because so few will respond. Well, we wish Kelvin Atkinson every success in steering the bill into law. Even if only a few uninsured drivers take up this offer of cheap auto insurance, it establishes an important principle best captured in Deut. 15:7. If there’s a poor man, don’t harden your heart, but freely open your hand and give him enough to meet his needs. It’s Christian to offer cheap auto insurance to the poor and needy.

//-->

Insurance while driving is one of these legal mandates that makes common sense. It all comes down to a question of financial responsibility. Most of our law is based on the idea you should always pay to put right whatever you do wrong. So if you are careless and damage the property of a friend while visiting, you are expected to pick up the bill for its repair or replacement. It could be just a few dollars when you knock over a bottle of beer. It might be more serious if you break an expensive vase. Either way, as a guest in someone’s home, you would usually feel honor-bound to make good on the loss.

Now put yourself behind the wheel of a vehicle. You mess up, coming round a bend too fast and fail to stop in time, crashing into the rear of a truck carrying expensive vases. The law says you should always be carrying a minimum amount of cover to pay for the damage you cause. In this, the lawmakers are reasonably generous. They know not everyone holds cash in a bank to cover these losses, so they make insurance mandatory. If the minimum is not enough, you are still liable to pay the difference. Should you have assets or a reasonably good pay check coming in each month, you could find yourself on the wrong end of a law suit.

So this should make you ask two different questions. First, how much insurance cover should you buy? The answer to this, like all good legal questions, is “it depends”. If you have no assets and earn very little, it’s uneconomic for anyone to sue you, so you might take the practical view that the minimum is enough. But if you have a good job and you are doing well enough to have positive housing equity, it’s worth carrying a lot more than the minimum to protect your home and any other assets.

The second question is how big a deductible you should accept. The insurance company tempts you into accepting up to $1,000 of any claims by giving you a discount. In these hard economic times, it can look a good deal to accept the maximum deductible. It takes some of the pressure off the family budget when the premium rate comes down. But let’s say you agree to pay the first $1,000 of any claim, can you afford it? Remember life is not always fair. In the accident, you damage your own vehicle. You are looking at the bill to repair it, plus the $1,000 on the deductible. Can your credit cards soak up all this as a lump sum? When you add in the interest payments on this extra borrowing, which was the better deal? Paying a few dollar a month more on the insurance policy, or hitting your credit cards with all this grief?

In the right circumstances, buying an auto insurance policy with the maximum deductible can be the right decision. Indeed, with cash so tight, it may be the only way you can afford it. But always remember to look at the worst case scenarios. Like there never could be two accidents in the same year, right? Buying auto insurance is all about taking on the risks you can manage.

When economic times are hard, everyone looks for ways to save their hard-earned dollars. The big temptation is to go for the lowest quotes. You look at the mandate and prefer not to run the risk of a prosecution. The gut response is therefore to pay the lowest possible price for the piece of paper to keep you legal on the roads. Except you have to ask yourself why the prices are so much lower from some of the insurance companies. There’s always the possibility that some have found a way to predict the amount of claims more accurately. Without the need for a contingency funds against unpredictable losses, we can all pay less. Or perhaps the executives have all voted themselves a big pay cut and passed on the savings to us hard-pressed consumers. Well, in your dreams, perhaps.

In fact, the most usual explanation for the lower premiums is the general unwillingness to pay out on claims. That way the directors and senior company officers can take their big salaries, and still have enough left over to pay a good enough dividend to the stockholders to keep them quiet. You could just assume the worst and avoid all the lowest quotes, or could could take a few moments to do a little research. That way, you could find the companies that really do give you the lowest rates and good service.

It might not surprise you know that, over the last three years, about one-third the complaints made to the Insurance Commissioners have been about auto insurance. Why, you ask, should the Commissioners know this? Well, every state insurance department is required to offer a complaint mediation service. This is supposed to give you an impartial investigation of the service you have received. If the Commissioner finds you have been wronged, the insurer can be invited to take action to make you feel better. This can just be that you complete the claim with an adequate valuation, or it can involve you receiving compensation on top. The politics of the state usually set the tone.

The Democrat states tend to be pro-consumer and order the insurers to make good your losses. For example, in 2010, the Commissioner in California recovered $52 millions from insurers judged to be offering poor services. Better still, the proactive Commissioners name and shame the insurers who offer the worst service, listing the number of complaints and the percentage upheld. The GOP states are, at best, neutral when it comes to consumer rights. However, there’s one virtue in all this. All states publish complaint-ratio reports. This shows the number of complaints as a percentage of the policies written by each insurer. So, although this is not perfect information, it’s a good indication of whether you are going to be complaining.

So before you get the next round of auto insurance quotes, find the website for your state’s Insurance Commissioner. You should be able to find the complaint-ratio without any difficulty and have the listing beside you when the quotes start coming in. Now you should be able to see which of the cheap car insurance offers are worth taking further.

No matter how many jokes you hear (or tell), the statistical evidence is absolutely clear. The boring truth is that women are involved in fewer accidents and, when they are unlucky, the damage to vehicles is less serious and people are not as badly injured. Women are safer drivers! Why is this the case? The best explanation is the way they are brought up. Whenever a daughter looks as if she might take a risk, her parents immediately run over, warning her of danger, picking her up protectively, and wrapping her in bubble wrap. From the cradle they are taught how to live their lives as if there was death lurking round every corner. Boys, on the other hand, are allowed to run, climb and jump as if there was nothing more natural in the world than the possibility they might break an arm or leg due to some tomfoolery. So, when it comes to getting behind the wheel of a car or truck, boys have the confidence that being surrounded by all this metal will protect them from harm should they crash, while girls worry about how they will explain even the slightest scratch to their parents. It’s the difference between, “Of course my truck can get through that gap” and “I think we should stop before we get into trouble”.

Look at every record, whether it’s the number of moving violation tickets issued, the number of people taken to emergency rooms following accidents, or claims made to insurance companies, it’s the same story. Women drive within the law and so are driving more slowly if there’s an accident. As a result, insurance companies reward women by giving them lower premium rates. The question raised and answered in a recent European Court case is whether this unfairly discriminates against men. The court has ordered European insurers to stop relying on gender as a key variable when calculating risk. It’s discriminatory to charge men more just because they are men (even though the evidence shows them to be more dangerous drivers).

So how should we react? People cannot control their biological sex. You come out of the womb and have to live with your genes. So it’s probably unfair to penalize a group of people over something they cannot control. But everyone can control how they drive. It’s not necessary to have testosterone injections to enable you to drive recklessly. Anyone can do it if that’s how they want to drive. So the fair way to assess the risk of accidents and so set the premium rates is to look at the evidence about driving safety. Those who never have an accident should be rewarded with lower premiums when the auto insurance quotes come in. But if people have left a trail of wreckage in their wake, they should be hit with higher premiums. Auto insurance companies should use price to offer direct incentives to all drivers on safety. Setting rates should have nothing to do with gender. It should be all about every individual’s driving record. Except, changing from the traditional approach means women suddenly paying more. That’s an exciting political prospect.

The lender might demand you to have full coverage when financing the auto. You also have to be sure you have competent liability coverage for your assets’ protection from property injury claims or personal violation that could originate from a car crash. Be certain to examine your lease contract for any least possible coverage limits, if you’re leasing the vehicle. Leases’ majority obliges you to carry a minimum liability coverage limit; otherwise you will be in lease’s violation. If you plan to purchase a vehicle, you’ll have to think about insuring your car. It might save you from risks, like vandalism, accidents, and theft. The law of the state is likely to request you obtaining at least a lesser amount of insurance’s coverage. You may find it circumspect to buy more than that. To be sure you receive the necessary coverage at the right price, you should examine different companies. It’s important to observe policies in conditions of exclusions, reputation of insurer, coverage and price.

You should occasionally review your car policy to make certain it meets your requirements. Selecting the suitable coverage level depends on several factors, including the amount of premiums you might comply, your vehicle’s price and the assets’ value you have to protect. Remember, your insurer might not all times pay the full demand size. You yourself will be responsible for the size that goes beyond the coverage, in case a demand against you transcends the established liability limit. An agent can advice you corresponding auto insurance coverage limits and adapt a policy to your necessities. You’ll be obliged to balance cost against coverage. In order to reduce the price of your premium, you may buy numerous insurance policies through the identical company, lower settled coverages, or increase your tax exemption, establish safety features in your vehicle.

Mexico is one of the most popular destinations for both American tourists and business people. There is a thriving resort area located on the Baja Peninsula, which includes gorgeous Spanish architecture and is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean on its western edge and the Gulf of California to the east. Along several border towns in both the U.S. and Mexico, there are prosperous examples of economic cooperation, including many large auto makers and their suppliers. Vehicle travel between the two countries is quite common and this leads many people to wonder if they need Mexican car insurance and how to find it.

One convenient and easy way to gather information is to research Mexico auto insurance online. Having proper coverage is essential, so finding the best place to gather information and buy a policy is important. Here are a few tips to get you started. First, look to see if the web site lists a membership for the Better Business Bureau. Take just a few seconds to check the standing on the BBB site. Find out how long the site has been online. A more established, long term web presence makes it more probable that you’ve found a good resource. Check for online reviews. Other people’s experiences may tell you a lot about the company.

Online Mexican insurance sites should provide reliable insurance guidance. For many people foreign to Mexico, Mexican insurance is completely unfamiliar. You need a site that provides a good background and multiple options. The site should explain how to structure your policy to get maximum coverage at minimum cost. You should see clear options about what coverage you need and why. Also, don’t ignore the site’s cosmetics. Is it well organized? Does it have a professional appearance? Is the site easy to navigate? Is the information communicated clearly with proper spelling and punctuation? If these factors are in place, you are more likely to find reliable information.

Pay particular attention to the company information. Look to see how long the company has been in existence. Are they licensed? Check out the products available. Do they meet your needs? For instance, if you are planning a trip to Baja, then you may need Baja insurance for the best coverage during your trip. Does your online Mexican insurance site offer location options? Perhaps most important of all, do the people behind the site have a good understanding of both Mexico and your home country? When you find an agent who is comfortable and familiar with insurance in both markets, you’ve found a keeper.

The school year is here again for college students across the United States. You know what that means? Spending. Yes, you’ll be paying a lot of money: books, tuition, housing, alcohol, and insurance. At least one of those things doesn’t have to be so expensive.

Learn how students can reduce the price of car insurance below.

STUDENTS FACING VARYING HIGH COSTS

College students will see some of the highest rates for insurance that exist. They are not as high as what high schoolers are charged on average, but they are pretty close. The reasons for these rates are down to the unique risks of college life and college towns:

    * high numbers of inexperienced drivers
* many high-stress drivers
* busy schedules mean rushing
* congested parking situations
* increased risk of encountering drunk drivers
* more likely to be driving late at night
* higher theft rates

Of course, not all situations are the same. In reality, rates are more highly dependent on the actual collision statistics coming out of the college town than the fact that it is a student on the policy. Certain factors may alter the anticipated costs of insurance.

For instance, if a student’s school is in an urban environment, it is going to be more expensive than were the school to be in a rural or suburban environment. If the school is an a bad part of town with higher theft rates, you should anticipate paying more for insurance than if the town were safer.

Commuting to school rather than living there only partly removes you from this risk. You will still be driving in the same city, but you also have added risks of driving the roads in between. This may also make you more likely to be involved in collisions due to fatigue, stress, and hurrying on the highways or the city streets.

STRATEGIES FOR REDUCING COSTS

Most students can reduce their cost of auto insurance by simply staying on or joining a parental policy. Most companies will allow this until students are in their mid twenties. Combining policies disperses the risk and counters the increase in rates from the student with a group policy discount.

Good students will also benefit from good grades. Not all companies offer this discount, so search hard with auto insurance quotes for a company that does value this trait in customers. The logic behind the good grades discount is that responsible students prove to be responsible drivers.

Alternatively, students could simply not drive. For commuters, this is not really possible, but you could also look into carpooling. Even driving a lower number of miles annually could save hundreds of dollars.

No matter what you choose to do, use auto insurance quotes to do your shopping. There’s no better way to save time or money. Get started with this site by seeing our insurance provider list and getting instant quotes online. Make sure the quotes are for the coverage levels suitable to your needs. Be very careful to use only the most accurate, precise information – otherwise your quotes won’t be accurate. Factor in discounts and claims records, to be sure you have a good long-term partner, then compare the pros and cons to choose a provider.

If you’ve seen the commercials talking about accident forgiveness, no doubt you’ve been interested. The insurance company makes themselves out to be extremely friendly and trustworthy, like they just want to help you. And because they only want to help you, they are going to let you get away with one collision – no consequences. Sound too good to be true? Read on. What exactly is Accident Forgiveness? Accident forgiveness is essential a clause in your insurance agreement that says that your rates will not rise after the first collision you are responsible for. Why is this so valuable? Because normally your rates would shoot up as much as 40% after being at-fault for a collision. That means that an accident forgiveness clause could potentially save you hundreds of dollars a year from the time of your first collision to your next. What’s the catch? You have to pay higher premiums in order to get that clause. Significantly higher premiums. How much higher depends on your driving history. If they think you will get into a collision soon, you’ll have to pay a lot for the clause. If it’s unlikely you’ll get into a collision anytime soon because of your great record, you won’t have to pay much at all – but do you even need it in that case? Who even qualifies for it? As a matter of fact, very few people will be offered an accident forgiveness clause.

You have to have a well-established, safe driving record for them to offer it to you. For the people who need it, people who have trouble staying out of collisions, you just don’t have a shot. Accident Forgiveness – Who should and who should not People looking to save This will only add to your premium. Just drive extra safely. If you don’t get into a collision for a year or two, then your decision will have been a good one. If you have a pretty clean record already, you rates won’t rise all that much after one accident anyhow. Teens Surprisingly, teen rates usually don’t go up at all after one at-fault collision anyhow.

This is because teens are kind of assumed guilty until proven innocent. Teens get the rates that bad drivers get, so one accident doesn’t change their profile. Accident forgiveness makes no sense for teenage drivers. People with Bad Driving Records If it makes financial sense for you to get this, then you probably don’t qualify for an accident forgiveness clause. People with Great Driving Records If you’ve got a clean record, avoid accident forgiveness unless you plan on crashing into somebody soon. Actually, even then you won’t be forgiven since it’s intentional! It doesn’t make financial sense to pay for something that you probably won’t use and won’t benefit much from anyhow. Is there a financial alternative? If your rates go up a lot after a collision, get auto insurance quotes. Comparing auto insurance quotes will help you find the best premiums. Ask the companies you got affordable auto insurance quotes from about their point plans – which tell you how much rates go up after a collision.

Insurance fraud is not just something that insurance companies need to worry about. You need to protect yourself against fraud. Scams by malicious individuals or groups, or simply negligence, can both cost you thousands of dollars and put you in danger.

When Shopping for Coverage

First and foremost, be cautious about the sources of insurance offers, especially those that are unsolicited. Selling insurance door-to-door or over the phone should be an automatic red flag. Avoid purchasing auto insurance in these ways.

Regardless of which auto insurance company you choose, make sure they are licensed in your state (this is a regulatory measure to keep insurance companies operating according to the law and their own financial standards). Furthermore, when you are looking into a policy, make sure you take the time to understand it. Don’t feel bad asking a lot of questions of your insurer-it’s their job to keep you informed, and it’s your responsibility as the policyholder to be informed. Make sure all “free” additions are in fact free, and understand any caveats that might not be covered under your policy.

When On the Road

Fraud rings have a number of techniques for causing accidents which, legally, appear to be your fault and will force you to pay for another person’s intentional damages and medical expenses.

Being an alert driver is always a good (and necessary) part of driving, and doing so should keep you out of most accidents regardless of whether they are intended for fraudulent claims. However, knowing these techniques can help you see potential problems ahead of time so you can avoid them.

When at an intersection with multiple left-turn lanes, it is possible that a con artist can try to side swipe you. If you are not mindful of staying in your lane when making a turn, you may drift into another lane, allowing a willing driver to swipe you. If you are in the wrong lane then you are considered responsible, regardless of what you personally saw to be willfully reckless driving. The easiest way to avoid this is to simply be mindful of lanes and other vehicles when you turn.

The Swoop-And-Squat is a technique whereby two cars working together will attempt to cause you to rear-end one of them. The “squat” car gets in front of you, and the “swoop” car quickly cuts off the squat car, “forcing” it to stop abruptly. This makes it very easy for you to accidentally rear-end it, but once the swooping car drives off, it appears to authorities as any rear end.

Of course, a swoop car is not necessary in order for a driver to stop quickly, so always be aware of your distance from the car in front of you; make sure that if the car ahead of you stops, it will take you at least 3 seconds to reach it. This way, you’ll have enough room to stop whether the driver intends to commit auto insurance fraud or not!

The common element in all situations: awareness. Think critically, stay informed, avoid trusting face value, and you will be less likely to be fooled or manipulated.
